FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 5, 2020--
Last night’s State of the Union Address included recognition of an incredible success story where the life of a 21-week premature baby was saved at Saint Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City. MEDNAX, Inc. (NYSE: MD) wishes to recognize Saint Luke’s and Pediatrix Medical Group of Kansas, a MEDNAX-affiliated neonatology practice, which clinically managed the care of this baby.
Overseen by Barbara Carr, M.D., the practice’s Medical Director, Pediatrix Medical Group of Kansas has clinically managed the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at St. Luke’s for over 20 years.
“The success of this micro-preemie baby and her family was a coordinated team effort, as it always is, which included support from our neonatology group, hospital administration and Saint Luke’s nursing staff. I am truly proud of what we accomplished together,” said Dr. Carr. “Our practice also benefits from decades of investment from MEDNAX, helping us to provide leading care to our patients. In particular, MEDNAX’s 100,000 Babies campaign has set the standard of care for babies across the country and directly enabled us to save this baby and thousands of others. I look forward to continuing to work with my incredible team and MEDNAX to help many more babies survive and thrive for years to come.”
MEDNAX has been a leader in the neonatal field for more than 40 years, and today is the nation’s largest network of neonatologists and advanced practitioners. Today, more than 2,200 affiliated neonatology clinicians care for nearly a quarter of the country’s neonatal patients in over 400 facilities across 36 states and Puerto Rico, and MEDNAX- affiliated clinicians, across multiple service lines, provide clinical services to more than 1 million newborn babies per year. Moreover, MEDNAX’s broader national medical group comprises more than 7,500 clinicians, providing services across obstetrics, pediatrics, anesthesiology and radiology.
“All of us at MEDNAX are immensely proud to see our affiliated physicians and our hospital partner honored at the State of the Union address,” said Roger J. Medel, M.D., MEDNAX Chief Executive Officer. “As a neonatologist myself, I am so pleased to see the enormous strides our organization has made over our decades of focus on the well-being of premature and sick newborns. This is just one wonderful example of how far our clinical understanding and capabilities have come and what is now possible in the field of neonatology.”
Mack Hinson, M.D., a neonatologist and President of Pediatrix and Obstetrix Medical Groups, said, “For over 40 years, MEDNAX has been committed to its mission to take great care of the patient, and has invested tens of millions of dollars into clinical research, education and quality to improve the quality of care for our patients. Our neonatal clinicians, including Dr. Carr and her team – as well as 400 other teams across the country – work every day to fulfill our mission, and we are thrilled to know that thousands of sick and premature infants have gone on to enjoy healthy and happy childhoods thanks to their efforts.”
