FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May. 26, 2009--
Driven by the need to balance patient care and growing demand for their
services, a group of maternal-fetal medicine physicians based in
Jacksonville, Florida, have joined MEDNAX, Inc. (NYSE: MD), a national
group practice focused on neonatal, maternal-fetal, pediatric cardiology
and anesthesia physician services, following the acquisition of their
practice.
Regional Obstetric Consultants is a five-physician practice that also
includes more than 30 clinical and administrative support staff that
provides care to expectant mothers, including the management of
high-risk pregnancies, throughout northeast Florida and southern
Georgia. Regional Obstetric Consultants has two offices, and
relationships with six hospitals in Jacksonville and the Daytona Beach,
Florida, area.
The group will practice as part of MEDNAX’s Pediatrix Medical Group, a
national medical group that encompasses the nation’s leading neonatal,
maternal-fetal medicine and pediatric cardiology physician group
practice. Neonatal physicians who practice as part of Pediatrix also
staff neonatal intensive care units at three of the Jacksonville-area
hospitals where Regional Obstetric Consultants’ physicians practice.
“Our practice has been clinically service-oriented for the past 20
years, and we’ve expanded in response to higher demand for our services
and the growth of our community,” said Ramon Castillo, M.D., who will
serve as the Medical Director of the Jacksonville maternal-fetal
practice. “It’s time for us to be part of a larger, more experienced
structure that will allow us to manage our growth, and gives us the
opportunity to participate in a national database of maternal fetal
outcomes to improve care in our community.”
MEDNAX paid cash for the practice, which is expected to be immediately
accretive to the Company’s earnings. No additional terms of the
transaction were disclosed. With the acquisition of Regional Obstetric
Consultants, MEDNAX has completed five physician group practice
acquisitions during 2009.
