Pediatrix Acquires South Carolina Neonatal Group Practice; Adds NICU Contract in San Antonio
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 17, 2002--Pediatrix Medical Group, Inc., (NYSE:PDX) has completed the acquisition of a physician group practice that provides neonatal intensive care patient services in the Columbia, South Carolina metropolitan area.
The eight physicians practicing as part of the group staff two hospital-based neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) that generate annual volume of approximately 19,000 patient days.
The acquisition complements Pediatrix's existing presence in South Carolina, which includes another physician group practice in Columbia as well as group practices in Greenville, Spartanburg and Rock Hill, just south of Charlotte, North Carolina.
"This acquisition represents the continued execution of our strategy of building presence within markets we already serve," said Roger J. Medel, M.D., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pediatrix. "In metropolitan areas across the country we have demonstrated that we realize increased operational efficiencies that are the product of our local market presence, while providing an attractive environment for physicians to concentrate on patient services."
Pediatrix also was awarded a contract to provide neonatal physician services at a hospital in San Angelo, Texas. The location is expected to generate annual combined NICU and well-baby nursery patient volume of approximately 2,500 patient days. It will be integrated with Pediatrix's existing neonatal physician group practice in San Antonio.
